Pézénas is above all rich in history. Pliny the Elder, in Roman times, already spoke of Pézénas, then called "Piscenae".

Pézénas, a city of culture!

Why do people say that Pézénas is the town of Molière? Molière, whose real name was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, is omnipresent in Pézénas, as you'll see as you stroll through its charming little streets. But why? Molière wasn't born in Pézénas. Nor did he die here. But the town was of particular importance in the career of the French actor and playwright. Between 1647 and 1657, Molière and his troupe, "L'illustre théâtre", spent a great deal of time in Pézénas, and of course performed here. It was in Pézénas that Molière perfected his art and found inspiration for many of his plays.
