Activities in Agde and Cap d’Agde: our must-sees

A stroll through the old town of Agde

A small fishing and farming town, Agde was founded in the 4th century BC and has plenty of character to seduce you. Far from the mass tourism of Cap d’Agde, take a stroll through its charming historic streets. You’ll step back in time through its architectural heritage: seafaring allure with a touch of Occitan, volcanic stone and the Hérault river running through it.

Agde won’t roll out the carpet for you, but offers authenticity and sobriety. Many are surprised by its dark facades. Made from basalt, this is explained by the town’s proximity to Mont Saint-Loup, the last Mediterranean volcano whose rock originated in the Massif Central.

With themouth of the Hérault offering trading opportunities, the Greeks built a wealthy city, complete with ramparts, asserting its agricultural and maritime strengths.

Every square, every street, right up to the ramparts and the port, takes us back to Hellenic times as if nothing had changed. A discovery steeped in history that will appeal to those who love escaping back in time…

Relaxing on the beaches of Cap d’Agde
