Immerse yourself in the treasures

submarines of the agathois coast

Welcome to Agde, one of the Mediterranean’s leading destinations, renowned for its sunny climate, golden and black sand beaches, volcanic creeks and a wide range of activities for the whole family. But beyond these well-known attractions lies an unsuspected wealth: the seabed of the Agatha coast, the guardian of fascinating archaeological treasures. Let yourself be surprised by this often overlooked facet of the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean during your next vacation in the South of France, and dive into the captivating underwater history waiting to be discovered.

First stage: Exploring the Cap d’Agde underwater trail

Dive into a unique adventure as you explore Cap d’Agde’s universally accessible underwater trail. Nestled at the foot of the majestic volcanic cliffs, in the heart of the Marine Protected Area, this 400-metre round-trip trail invites you to discover the wonders of the seabed. With moderate depths ranging from 1 to 4 meters, it’s ideal for everyone, whether you’re a snorkeling enthusiast or a beginner in scuba diving. This trail, linking La Plagette to the volcanic islets, has been specially designed to offer an immersive experience through the local marine flora and fauna, all under the guidance of ecological buoys.

At the Point Accueil, located at La Plagette, you’ll find additional information on the species encountered during your underwater stroll. A surprise awaits you at the fourth buoy: a partial replica of an ancient ship, dating back to Greco-Roman times, has been placed at a depth of just 3 meters, making this discovery visible even from the surface. This replica, created in partnership with the Musée de l’Éphèbe, highlights the incredible archaeological heritage of the Agatha coastline, including the wreck discovered in 1982 in the Baie de l’Amitié. This vessel, measuring between 20 and 25 meters and capable of carrying up to 90 tons, bears witness to the fascinating maritime history of the Gulf of Lion, and part of its hull is now on display at the Musée de l’Éphèbe et d’Archéologie sous-marine in Agde.

Ecological precautions :

To preserve the beauty and integrity of this unique environment, it’s essential to take certain precautions during your immersion. In particular, it’s advisable not to lean on the rocks or the Posidonia meadows, a Mediterranean marine plant that forms vast underwater meadows, so as not to disturb the local ecosystem and preserve the flora and fauna that live there.
