Le Moulin des Évêques, Agde
Need another good reason to visit the Salon du Bien-être, on March 4 and 5, 2023, in Agde? It will also give you the opportunity to visit, discover or rediscover, one of the architectural gems of the town of Agde: the Moulin des Évêques.
Built in 1170 by Pierre Raymond, bishop of Agde, and enlarged between 1210 and 1216, the Moulin des Évêques is a water-powered wheat mill on the banks of the Hérault. At the time, all inhabitants of Agde and the surrounding area were obliged to come here to grind their grain for flour, in return for a tax for the clergy. The Moulin des Évêques continued to operate as a hydraulic flour mill until 1789.
Over the decades, the Moulin des Évêques has housed a variety of activities: a hydroelectric plant to supply water to the town of Agde, then to supply electricity, a rice mill, and finally a food cannery specializing in sardines from 1963 to 1979.
On the market since 1982, the Moulin des Évêques was finally bought by Gédéagde, a company that built housing and a multi-purpose hall on the site. The renovation, completed in 2010, has restored all its beauty to a site that had been neglected over the years.
The Moulin des Évêques has been restored to its former glory and has once again become one of Agde’s landmarks. An elegant glass roof has been installed at the entrance to the building, adding a touch of modernity. The imposing chimney, listed as a historic monument, crosses the glass roof with pride, symbolizing the link between Agde’s past, present and future.
A place to see and discover during your stay in Agde or Cap d’Agde.
